This hallmarked sterling silver crab brooch belongs to Studio Variations, a group of finished designs retained in the studio archive after their production cost exceeded the client’s target retail price. Developed after earlier sea-life costume jewellery collections, the series was made in sterling silver with black rhodium plating and hundreds of individually hand-set cubic zirconia; only a handful were produced.

The crab’s claws, articulated legs and shell segments are sculpted and set with pink cubic zirconia following the natural contours of the form. Black rhodium and high-polish finishes provide a gunmetal contrast to the pink pavé stones. It has a secure brooch pin fastening and may be worn on a jacket, scarf or knitwear.

The crab is described as a symbol of resilience, protection, quiet strength, adaptability and coastal life. This example is in excellent archive condition.
