This sterling silver pill box is a hinged keepsake box with a hand-painted enamel lid depicting a horse rider and hunting scene. Made in England circa 1990s, it was created as part of Ari D. Norman’s hand-painted enamel giftware and bears English hallmarks.
The softly contoured, sculptural form was designed to rest in the palm. Its rounded silver body opens to a highly polished silver interior; above it, the enamel panel presents a mounted rider, horse at full stride, among rolling fields, hedgerows and winter trees. The scene was painted individually by hand by enamelling artists using traditional enamelling techniques, with no transfers, printed artwork or mass production. This hand-painted process meant production remained limited.
This example belongs to Studio Variations, within The JewelAri Archive, a collection of distinctive Ari D. Norman designs, artist’s samples and archive treasures. The workshop produced sterling silver giftware with hand-painted scenes of British country pursuits, wildlife, sporting traditions and rural life throughout the 1990s. Originally intended as a pill or snuff box, it may also hold rings, cufflinks, mementoes or other small treasures. It is in excellent archive condition.
