This vintage sterling silver opal mosaic bird pendant necklace dates from the early 1970s. Its round pendant presents two birds among flowers and foliage, formed from small pieces of opal mosaic against a black background.
Blues, greens, turquoise and violet emerge across the inlay as the pendant moves, while the high-polish sterling silver frame remains deliberately simple around the miniature scene. The design uses the changing colour of opal to distinguish wings, leaves, petals and branches.
An early archive acquisition from the 1970s sample years, this piece forms part of The Curator’s Cabinet. It is supplied ready to wear on an 18″ sterling silver curb chain. The necklace is in excellent vintage condition.
The pendant belongs to an early group of opal mosaic designs that marked the beginning of a long relationship with opal. Its small scale holds a detailed landscape: two birds resting beneath leaves and surrounded by flowers, with colour shifting across the black ground.
